Light Limaçons and Cardioids

While putting away the bowls, I noticed some nice limaçons and cardioids made from the refraction of light.

    I just noticed this and now I’m very interested in knowing why this happens. It’s like an elliptic paraboloid which bounces light to the focus. But here it’s not a single point. And light must be hitting it from an angle, not parallel to the axis of the paraboloid. It’s preety weird…
